The Position
This position is a “pool” position meaning that openings may or may not be currently available. The District maintains a “pool” of applications for positions which are needed on an ongoing basis at Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. The advantage of “pool” positions is when a position becomes available, the Dean may immediately begin screening applications from the available pool of applicants without having to post a position and wait while the position is being advertised. Your application for this position will be kept current for a period of two years.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide effective classroom instruction in Art History, including surveys of western and non-western art, using methods and materials appropriate to the subject matter
- Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions
- Teaching on-campus, online, hybrid, Dual Enrollment, evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the contract
- Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs. Participation in departmental and college professional activities and/or committees is welcomed, but not required
- Participate in program activities including curriculum and program planning, development, evaluation, and decision making as well as the development of new teaching-learning methods and materials. Part-time faculty will be compensated according to the District contract
- Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with District, College, and Division policies in the performance of duties
Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a Master’s or above in art history, history of art and architecture or visual culture/visual studies OR Bachelor’s in art history and Master’s in history OR Master’s in art with a recorded emphasis or concentration in art history OR the equivalent (see below)
- Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
Equivalence to Minimum Qualifications
Degree Equivalence
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.
Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:
i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and
ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.
Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Currency and depth of knowledge in the field of art history, both western and non-western art
- Understanding of and commitment to teaching community college students
- Knowledge and understanding of the accountability and critical dimensions of equity in the classroom
- Ability to use and develop teaching methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration, and engage students actively in learning, encouraging them to become independent, creative learners with higher order thinking skills
- Ability to organize and explain materials in ways appropriate to students with different abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experiences
- Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing with a diverse campus community
- Understanding of the role of supplemental learning and academic resources; familiarity with the use of multimedia-based technology, including computer-based technology appropriate to the art history discipline
- Support of the Division’s commitment to establish academic standards
- Ability to work effectively and professionally with colleagues and members of the campus community
- An understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disabilities, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty, and staff
- Experience with or willingness to use Open Education Resources
Preferred Qualifications
- Successful experience teaching art history at the community college level
- Ability to teach one or more of the following: surveys of western and non-western art, and art appreciation
- Demonstrated ability to employ innovative teaching techniques and methodologies
- Knowledge and ability to make the subject matter inclusive in terms of gender and culture, and awareness of the social issues of visual culture
- Successful online teaching experience
- Knowledge of cultural-responsive pedagogical teaching techniques and effective ways for engaging students who are historically under-represented and under-served

Foreign Education completed outside of the United States must be deemed equivalent to that gained in conventional/accredited U.S. education programs in order for it to be considered for the satisfaction of minimum qualifications. Foreign transcripts must be translated and evaluated by a U.S.-based credentials evaluation service. The District currently accepts evaluations from agencies approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
