CDL Instructor

Job Description

Occupational Summary

The CDL Instructor is responsible for instructing CDL courses for the Workforce Development department. The primary duties are to plan, coordinate, and oversee the instructional delivery of the CDL program. This position also ensures consistency and quality of instruction by coordinating with part-time CDL instructors to meet compliance with program policy. The CDL Instructor will instruct and monitor CDL student actions in all phases of training and ensure student compliance with program policy.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides excellent customer service and assistance to internal and external customers through walk-in, telephone and email
  • Responsible for delivering instruction of North Carolina Entry Level Drivers curriculum
  • Stays up-to-date on the curriculum to comply with FMCSA Entry Level guidelines 
  • Maintains accurate student attendance roster and student records
  • Maintains maintenance records of all trucks
  • Maintains records along with an inventory of supplies and equipment
  • Coordinates the ordering of materials, supplies, and availability of facilities for practical experiences for courses
  • Maintains classroom in a neat and orderly manner
  • Coordinates and plans for daily instruction, ensuring proper utilization of equipment and students
  • Presents instruction in a professional, timely, and accurate manner consistent with Truck Driver Training policies and procedures
  • Instructs and monitors student actions in all phases of training and ensure students’ compliance with program policy
  • Evaluates students daily making formal evaluations on a regular schedule by utilizing appropriate academic and skills tests
  • Schedules all driving tests for students with the NCDMV
  • Ensures that trucks and trailers are roadworthy and inspected annually as required
  • Assists in recruiting part-time CDL instructors
  • Mentors part-time CDL instructors to develop instructional delivery capabilities
  • Networks with local employers and establishes positive working relationships; attends public relations events as needed
  • Promotes community awareness of program opportunities
  • Meets all state and federal driver qualifications
  • Participates in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College’s mission, core values and goals

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Valid NC driver's license.

Valid NC Class A CDL license.

Five (5) years’ of over-the-road driving experience.

Teaching/training experience with novice drivers.

Preferred:
Associate's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

Knowledge

  • Adult learning theory, concepts and teaching methodology
  • Curriculum design and development
  • Knowledge of college programs, services and procedures relating to workforce development program
  • Methods and techniques of program marketing and publicity
  • Working knowledge of records management and control
  • Federal, state and college requirements regarding FERPA and other applicable laws and regulations
  • Veteran’s Administration (VA) requirements for VA students
 
 
Skills
  • Demonstrates a level of expertise on subject matter that coincides with CDL course instructing
  • Proficiency in planning, organization, communication, training, and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in technological systems as they apply to instruction and administrative needs, including Microsoft Office
  • Competency in monitoring/assessing the performance of self, other individuals and programs to make improvements or take corrective action
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
  • Works effectively in a team environment with a customer service focus
