University of Hawai‘i, Kapi‘olani Community College, Office of Community and Continuing Education is seeking applications for the Health Continuing Education Non-Credit Instructor (Casual Hire). Important note: Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions.  Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave).  Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Continuation is dependent on satisfactory performance, program needs, and renewal of funds.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Develop and teach continuing education health classes.

  • Subjects include but are not limited to the following: Medical Coding, Medical Billing, Adult Residential Care Home, Emergency Medical Services, Phlebotomy, Massage Therapy (basic & specialized), Optometry Assistant, Certified Dental Assistant, Community Dental Health Coordinator/Instructor, Pharmacy Technician, Certified Nurse Aide Instructor, Pharmacy Technician, Certified Nurse Aide Instructor, Surgical Technology, and School Health Aide.

  • Develop curriculum.

  • Under general supervision, teach courses assigned.

  • Evening classes, weekend classes, and distance education classes may be assigned as part of the assignment.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and to teach for a variety of audiences, including adult learners.

  • Teaching assignment is as needed and dependent upon course enrollment     


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Certificate and/or license, associate or bachelor's degree in the appropriate subject area, when applicable; or equivalent combination of education/training and job-related experience

  • Knowledge, skills, ability, and expertise are required in the field.

  • Must be able to provide a course proposal, description, and syllabus detailing the student outcomes.

  • Note: For health courses, education and work experience requirements will vary depending on the course you are applying for:

    • Medical Coding: Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder-Instructor (CPC-I), minimum 5 years related work experience.

    • Medical Billing: Medical Billing Certificate and 3 years related work experience, Minimum 5 years related work experience

    • Adult Residential Care Home (ARCH)

      • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN); at least two years of nursing experience, of which one year must be in the provision of long-term care facility services; must have completed a course in teaching adults or have experience in teaching adults or supervising nurse aides; AND RN eligible for Hawaii State License. License required by effective date of employment; OR

      • Bachelor Degree in Nursing (BSN); at least two years of nursing experience, of which one year must be in the provision of long-term care facility services; must have completed a course in teaching adults or have experience in teaching adults or supervising nurse aides; AND RN eligible for Hawaii State License. License required by effective date of employment.

    • Emergency Medical Services Instructor

      • Master's in Health Sciences, Biological Sciences, Nursing or EMS; AND Current EMT-P certification by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and current Hawai‘i certification as a MICT (or certification in progress); OR Registered Nurse and a current Hawai‘i State license as an RN; and Current ACLS Instructor certification; current PHTLS Instructor certification (or equivalent), current PALS instructor certification (or equivalent), and Hazardous Materials Awareness certification (or equivalent); OR

      • Bachelor's in Health Sciences, Biological Sciences, Nursing or EMS; 3 years related work experience which should include postsecondary teaching; at least one of the three years must be professional EMS (EMT or MICT) experience; and Current EMT-P certification by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and current Hawai‘i certification as a MICT (or certification in progress); OR Registered Nurse and a current Hawai‘i State license as an RN; and Current ACLS Instructor certification; current PHTLS Instructor certification (or equivalent), current PALS instructor certification (or equivalent), and Hazardous Materials Awareness certification (or equivalent); OR

      • Certification as a Paramedic; AND a Baccalaureate degree in any field; 5 years related work experience which should include postsecondary teaching; at least 2 of the 5 years must be professional EMS (EMT or MICT) experience; AND Current EMT-P certification by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and current Hawai‘i certification as a MICT (or certification in progress); OR Registered Nurse and a current Hawai‘i State license as an RN; and Current ACLS Instructor certification; current PHTLS Instructor certification (or equivalent), current PALS instructor certification (or equivalent), and Hazardous Materials Awareness certification (or equivalent); OR

      • Associate Degree in MICT; 10 years related work experience which should include postsecondary teaching; at least 3 of the 10 years must be professional EMS (EMT or MICT) experience; AND Current EMT-P certification by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and current Hawai‘i certification as a MICT (or certification in progress); OR Registered Nurse and a current Hawai‘i State license as an RN; and Current ACLS Instructor certification; current PHTLS Instructor certification (or equivalent), current PALS instructor certification (or equivalent), and Hazardous Materials Awareness certification (or equivalent); OR

      • Medical Doctor AND Current Hawaii license as an M.D.; current ACLS instructor certification; board eligible, or board certified in emergency medicine

    • Phlebotomy: PBT (ASCP or MLT (ASCP) credential, minimum Associates degree, minimum 36 months of experience.

    • Massage Therapy: Hold a current and valid Hawai‘i State license in Massage Therapy and/or National Certification in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.

    • Optometry Assistant: Vocational School Certification in Optometry Assistant or Doctorate in Optometry, 36 months experience.

    • Certified Dental Assistant

      • Bachelor’s degree or higher in any field with 3 years occupational experience in the application of four-handed dentistry principles, either as a dental assistant or working with a chairside assistant, AND Dental Assisting National Board "Certified Dental Assistant"; OR

      • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD) that is licensed to practice in the State of Hawai’i

    • Pharmacy Technician: minimum Vocational Certificate in Pharmacy Technician, PTCB certified, minimum 36 months of experience.

    • Certified Nurse Aide Instructor

      • Bachelor's in Science in Nursing with at least two years of nursing experience, with at least one year in the provision of long-term care facility services (must have completed a course in teaching adults or have experience in teaching adults or supervising nurses aides) AND must be an RN eligible for Hawai‘i State License (license required by effective date of employment); OR

      • Associate Degree in Nursing with at least two years of nursing experience, with at least one year in the provision of long-term care facility services (must have completed a course in teaching adults or have experience in teaching adults or supervising nurses aides) AND must be an RN eligible for Hawai‘i State License (license required by effective date of employment); OR

      • Diploma in Nursing with at least two years of nursing experience, with at least one year in the provision of long-term care facility services (must have completed a course in teaching adults or have experience in teaching adults or supervising nurses aides) AND must be an RN eligible for Hawai‘i State License (license required by effective date of employment)

    • Surgical Technology

      • Bachelor's in any field and certification in Surgical Technology with 3 years experience in an operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology or a combination of both, within the past five years, AND must have Current certification in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA); OR

      • Associate Degree in any field with certification in Surgical Technology with 5 years experience in an operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology or a combination of both, within the past five years, AND must have Current certification in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA)

    • School Health Aide:

      • Diploma in Nursing with two years of nursing experience (must have completed a course in teaching children, adolescents and/or adults or have experience in teaching children, adolescents and/or adults) AND must be an RN eligible for Hawai‘i State License (license required by effective date of employment)


Desirable Qualifications:


  • Teaching experience at the community college or university level

  • Demonstrated ability to work with adult and non-traditional learners

  • Experience teaching in an online setting
