Job Description and Duties
The incumbent works under the direction of the Environmental Program Manager (EPM) I, Section Chief, of the Environmental Management Branch (EMB), within the Emergency Restoration, and Waste Management Section. The Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) [Sr. ES (Spec)] is responsible for independently conducting and managing the most complex and difficult scientific studies, inspections, investigations, and compliance issues related to the Medical Waste Management Program (MWMP). The Sr. ES (Spec) also assists the EPM I in conducting bill analysis, developing MWMP regulations, reviewing, and approving alternative treatment technologies.
The attached duty statement indicates whether this position is eligible for telework. The advertised position is in the Environmental Management Branch (EMB). EMB regulates the medical waste industry, pre-harvest commercial shellfish operations, and recreational health (public swimming pools, ocean beaches and organized camps); provides sanitary surveillance of state institutions; administers the Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) program; oversees radiological cleanup at military base closure facilities, coordinates the State's Indoor Radon Program, the Medical Waste Management Program and the California Department of Public Health's Nuclear Emergency Response Program.

Desirable Qualifications
- Experience conducting inspections and/or audits.
- Experience representing an agency/department to various organizations and groups.
- Experience with writing inspection and/or survey reports.
- Experience in interpretation and implementation of statutes and regulations.
- Knowledge of conducting Legislative bill analysis and writing regulations.
- Experience in healthcare, environmental services, or health and safety.
