Smith College

Job Description

Full job description

The Department of Chemistry at Smith College invites applications for a three-year postdoctoral fellowship in chemistry beginning July 1, 2024. Under the supervision of Professor Kate Queeney, this postdoctoral fellowship offers a combined teaching and research position at a selective liberal arts college. The successful candidate will conduct independent research with the focus aligned to Prof. Queeney’s research program in surface chemistry. Her research is currently focused on the development and characterization of polymer thin films with variable and controllable wettability. This work builds on both our expertise in silicon surface chemistry and our previous study on the effects of surface chemistry and nanoscale surface topography on biofilm nucleation. This project is a collaboration with polymer chemist Prof. Maren Buck in the Chemistry Department. Candidates with experience in polymer synthesis and/or surface chemistry and characterization are welcome to apply; the successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of this project. Teaching responsibilities are two courses per year, to include the department’s offerings at the introductory level and at the intermediate/advanced level depending on the specific expertise of the candidate. A Ph.D. in chemistry or a closely related field is required, and candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand or all requirements for the degree fulfilled by the start of the appointment. A commitment to excellence in teaching and undergraduate research is essential.

The Department of Chemistry has state-of-the-art facilities and instrumentation, and its faculty is dedicated to active research programs with undergraduate students.
