General Summary

Reports directly to the museum Security Manager. Provide gallery security and other support services in a museum setting. Patrols assigned areas to safeguard exhibits and property against theft, vandalism, and potential hazards/loss. Security officers are required to fulfill obligations and duties set forth by the Security Manager and Director of MoCNA. Individuals employed by MoCNA Security may be assigned to special activities or perform duties for the museum or school as deemed appropriate by the Security Manager or the Director of MoCNA.

Principal Duties

  • Secure all assigned buildings and grounds. Locks and unlocks exits daily.
  • Assures the safety and comfort of visitors and enforces safety regulations.
  • Provides information to visitors on exhibits, the museum, and surrounding areas. Must have excellent communication skills for interaction with the public.
  • Stands guard during counting of daily cash receipts.
  • Ensures people in facilities after working hours are authorized to be in museum.
  • Ensures windows, doors and gates are locked and secured.
  • Ensures space heaters and appliances are turned off at the end of the day.
  • Ensures exterior lighting fixtures are in working condition.
  • Ensures fire lanes are clear.
  • Checks pipes faucets for leakage.
  • Checks doors and windows for damage.
  • Ensures GSA vehicles are not disturbed.
  • Escorts individuals leaving the facilities during the late evening hours
  • Controls traffic in parking areas to ensure driveways are clear.
  • Patrols museum activities and grounds for trespassers.
  • Sign in all visitors and escort to destination.
  • Assists in controlling disorders occurring in the facilities.
  • Participates in training sessions on security, safety and/or museum programs.
  • Administers first aid to personnel, visitors, and clients.
  • Answers alarms and investigates disturbances.
  • Inspects burglar alarms, fire sprinkler system and other emergency equipment to insure good operating condition.
  • During Indian Market onsite early morning set up and/or stay late for all after hour receptions and events that includes set up take down and clean up, caterers, audio video, tables chairs and equipment. Other public events during the year, sets up and takes down all chairs, tables, tents, and audio equipment.
  • Prepares incident reports.
  • Reports problems occurring while on duty.
  • Reports major disturbances to local law enforcement authorities.
  • Works closely with museum store staff to ensure safety of merchandise and staff
  • Assure the safety and comfort of museum visitor and enforce safety regulations
  • Prevents solicitations on premises
  • Repairs and or replaces motion sensors, electronic door locks when not working properly. 
  • Repairs or replaces cameras and monitors in house 
  • Maintains safety operations such as stanchion exhibit or facility construction, care and maintenance of parking lots and outdoor walkways.
  • Plumbing and electrical, install new faucets repair minor water leaks, repair, or replace light fixture power outlets as needed, replace light bulbs as needed all areas
  • Snow removal exterior of museum apply Ice Melt as needed
  • Disconnects and drains concession stand water heater and drain all exterior water faucets winterize all exterior water lines on loading dock with heat tape
  • Plants flowers and trees in Art Park and courtyard areas, upkeep of these areas by watering plants and weeding all areas.
  • Maintains museum GSA van vacuum, when needed, oil changes
  • Set up offices, desks, chairs, phones, and any other equipment needed.
  • Power outages, reboot HVAC systems two air handler units and one chiller. Also reboot HVAC computer systems. If there is a power outage during after-hours will provide security coverage during the night.
  • Clean and or change air filters for office desk top air purifiers.
  • Replenish hand sanitizers, face mask, disinfectant sprays wipes.
  • During operating hours clean and disinfect all areas within the museum using fogger and/or disinfectant sprays and wipes. Includes bathroom stalls and toilets, theater seating, stairwell handrails, elevator, and all door handles.
  • Officers change fan coil and air handler unit filters as needed between preventive maintenance service calls to maintain clean air in exhibit galleries.
  • Monitors the museum electronic security CCTV systems and responds to exhibit gallery conditions.
  • Maintains humidity and temperature settings within the exhibit galleries using Seimens computer software.

Additional Duties Assist with Exhibition De-install and Installation

  • Assists the curators and preparators with de-installation of exhibits which includes moving crates, packing crates, removal of wall vinyl lettering on walls, moving pedestals, wall touch up and painting. 
  • Assists with construction and demo of walls within gallery exhibit areas. 
  • Assists curatorial staff with unloading crates and installing and/or removing artwork in gallery areas.
  • Cleanup as exhibits crew installs new shows
  • Installs exhibit banners on exterior of museum.
  • Installs public information in marquee signs in front of museum
  • Cleans gallery floors twice a month with Bona floor scrubber
  • Regularly cleans glass vitrines in exhibition galleries.
  • Vehicle traffic control when Semi trucks deliver exhibition crates.
  • Removes art if damaged or in need of repair or re-hanging.
  • Sets up evening and weekend lectures, performances, workshops, demonstrations, or other duties for programming and exhibition openings.

Assists with large groups and school tours in exhibition galleries.

 

Requirements

  

Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent; able to read, write, speak, and understand English well.
  • Must pass security clearance check
  • Ability to detect unusual circumstances, such as safety hazards; use good judgment; act quickly and sensibly in emergency situations; report situations accurately; communicate effectively; deal tactfully and effectively with employees, clients, the public and law enforcement.
  • Successful completion of first aid CPR course.
  • Ability to lift 80-125 lbs.
  • Must have security, law enforcement or military background. Exceptions are based on individuals.
  • Must not abuse prescribed medication, alcohol and not use illegal drugs.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must be dependable and on time to work.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings with continuous mobility. Weekend work is required. Potential hazards exist when dealing with trespassers, vandals, and unruly clients. Must work various shifts and Holidays.
