Position Summary:
The Assistant Dean for Finance and Administation provides leadership and direction to the fiscal and administrative operations within the Charles Widger School of Law (“Law School”), serving as the Chief Operations Officer for the Law School, and plays a key role in driving strategic initiatives for the Law School. The Assistant Dean serves as a principal advisor to the Dean and Vice Dean, and collaborates with other members of the Law School and University leadership teams. The Assistant Dean conducts analysis, creates proposals, and develops systems to secure and enhance the use of financial, staffing, physical plant, and administrative resources in support of the Law School’s mission. The Assistant Dean assumes responsibility for functions and projects as delegated by the Dean, assumes a significant role in rethinking the administrative functions at the Law School, and serves as a member of the Dean’s management team for the Law School.
This position will be filled as an Assistant Dean or Associate Dean based on the experience level of the successful candidate.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for the Law School operating budget, including overseeing administration of financial resources, budget planning, and developing and implementing plans for cost-effective use of resources. Oversees the Law School budget and projections processes—including instructional, restricted, operating, and capital/facilities budgets—and continually monitors resources and mitigates risk factors with long-term resource planning initiatives. Conveys information about the Law School’s resources, operations, and planning to appropriate constituents through reporting processes.
Serves as the primary Law School liaison to Human Resources/Office of the Provost on hiring matters and provides support to hiring managers and supervisors. Responsible for Human Resource management for administrative employees, including the annual performance evaluation and merit raise program for non-faculty employees. Develops job descriptions, staffing proposals, and provides oversight to all Law School hiring processes and salary/equity matters.
Leads all physical plant planning and enhancement efforts, in collaboration with Facilities Management. Responsible for space management, physical plant maintenance and improvements.
Provides leadership, oversight, and strategic direction to key strategic initiatives that are top priorities for the Law School and the Dean and that require coordination across a number of departments and functions within the Law School and the University. Coordinates and facilitates strategic planning activities, including annual priority setting, strategic plan refreshes, and leadership team planning. Oversees the Law School’s data collection, analysis, and reporting needs, including ABA reporting, USNWR reporting, various faculty/staff/student surveys and other reporting requirements, and supports data-driven decision making across the Law School.
Responsible for functions and projects as delegated by the Dean, assumes a significant role in rethinking the administrative functions at the Law School, and serves as a member of the Dean’s management team for the Law School.
Responsible for management of contracting, insurance, risk waivers and related matters, including interfacing with Risk and General Counsel.
Works with other departments at Villanova University, including the Office of the Provost, Financial Affairs/Budget, Controller’s Office, Facilities Management, Human Resources, Procurement, Risk, General Counsel and UNIT , ensuring open communication and full support of and in compliance with university-wide initiatives, policies, procedures and protocols.
Minimum Qualifications:For an Assistant Dean:
Bachelor’s degree required, J.D., M.B.A., M.A. or other relevant advanced degree preferred
For an Associate Dean:
J.D., M.B.A., M.A. or other relevant advanced degree required.
Minimum Work Experience:
The candidate must have relevant broad-ranging operations and finance experience within a business, academic, or non-profit environment; for an Assistant Dean at least seven years of experience, or for an Associate Dean nine years of experience and distinguished achievement within the responsibilities of that role.
Specific Job Knowledge:
Significant and progressively more responsible administrative and management experience, including planning and budget responsibilities, preferable in legal or higher education, or in a legal organization. Strong financial management skills with a proven track record for successfully delivering results-oriented programs.
Experience in handling strategic human resource issues. Proven competency in strategic planing, communications, relationship building, and higher education stakeholder engagement, including students, faculty, staff, administrators, and external stakeholders.
Work Skills:
The individual selected must have strong presentation skills and excellent interpersonal, planning and writing skills, and must be a team player and coalition builder.
Must have highly developed organizational and leadership skills, including initiative, judgment and creativity required to lead a multi-disciplinary team; that are financially savvy and diplomatic; possess a track record of success through influence; and have an appreciation for building strong partnerships.
Must be a motivator and self-starter with the ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment.
Must have a demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse population of faculty, students and staff, and being committed to a culture of professionalism with a customer service focus.
