Girls on the Run International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.


 

Girls on the Run headquarters (GOTR HQ) is the primary point of contact, resources, and support for 170 councils that deliver its programming in their local communities. GOTR HQ has approximately 50 employees including four Directors of Council Development who advise councils in specific geographical regions.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting directly to the VP of Council Development, the Director of Council Development develops and implements strategies to enhance the capacity, resilience, and growth of 35 councils in the Western region of the U.S. The director focuses on providing councils with strategic capacity-building and growth support, guidance in expanding access, inclusion, and reach, and oversight to ensure operational quality and compliance. This role offers direction to councils and contributes to organizational initiatives, significantly enhancing its impact and ability to serve more girls, while fostering sustained growth for Girls on the Run.


 

The primary responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:


 

Council Growth & Development

  • Support councils with strategies that increase sustainability, including expansions, mergers, staffing structures, board development, fund development, and structural enhancements
  • Build community support and increase brand awareness in areas of strategic emphasis among councils in the Western region of the US.
  • Provide consultative guidance to ensure sustainable program growth with an emphasis on quality, diversity, and inclusion, and monitoring key performance indicators
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with council staff and volunteer leaders

 

Council Support

  • Provide leadership, vision, and direction to council directors and boards in the western region as they build and develop their councils
  • Support and/or participate in relevant regional council-to-council connection meetings
  • Support conflict resolution among key council constituents when needed
  • Assist councils with compliance issues and crisis management situations
  • Act as a conduit for sharing information between councils and HQ

 

Subject Matter Expertise

Provide subject matter expertise to all councils in one or more of the following areas: fund development, strategic planning, board development, volunteer management, programming, and human resources. In this role, the Director will:

  • Develop organization-wide strategies to support councils in meeting organizational goals
  • Share council perspective on tools, resources, training, and support needed with HQ leadership.
  • Collaborate with relevant HQ departments to create and/or leverage resources in the subject matter to benefit all councils
  • Facilitate on-site, regional, and biennial training sessions

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is primarily remote, with certain physical requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of the job effectively. These requirements can be met with or without accommodation:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing while working on a computer.
  • Ability to operate a keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to hear and understand spoken communication in virtual meetings and phone calls.
  • Ability to communicate effectively via verbal and written communication.

 

Girls on the Run strives to provide staff with opportunities for meaningful in-person connection throughout the year including staff gatherings, professional development opportunities and organization-wide conferences. Employees are always encouraged, and in occasional instances required, to participate in and contribute to these events. This position includes up to 25% travel within the continental U.S. (Note: trips can be up to 1 week in length.)

QUALIFICATIONS

The following combination of experience and qualities are needed for success in the role. Girls on the Run embraces a culture of learning and development, so candidates who don’t currently have experience in every area, but are dedicated and adaptive learners, are encouraged to apply.


 

Experience

  • Proven non-profit leadership success
  • 5+ years working within a federated nonprofit organizational model
  • Proven success managing complex operations, projects, programs, or services
  • Developing, analyzing, and managing an annual budget greater than $500,000
  • 5+ years supervising, evaluating, and coaching upper management staff
  • Working with and successfully engaging Board of Directors
  • Leveraging financial systems to fuel sustainable operations
  • Using data to assess business challenges and opportunities
  • Facilitating collaboration with a wide array of organizations to advance community impact
  • Proven success motivating others and fostering teamwork

This is a remote, exempt full-time position offering a compensation range of $80,000 - $85,000 annually, depending on experience.
