Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The ideal candidate will be familiar with topics such as the design of fire protection systems, including detection and alarm, automatic suppression systems, egress and smoke control systems; fire resistant construction; life safety considerations; engineering design guides and standards related to fire protection systems and buildings; contemporary developments in fire protection system hardware; and analysis and computational methods that support the development of fire protection designs.
The FPE Department offers the only ABET accredited B.S. Degree in Fire Protection Engineering. The graduate program offers a research master of science degree and a professional master of engineering degree. The department has an active Ph.D. program that is administered by other engineering departments. The department is located in a state-of-the-art facility, with expanded offices and laboratories. Access is also available to additional fire facilities on campus and the campus is in proximity to major government fire laboratories. Fire Protection Engineering is one of the eight departments in the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland College Park.

- A master’s degree is required. Either the master’s degree or bachelor’s degree must be in fire protection engineering, fire engineering or fire safety engineering.
Experience:
- The candidate will have at least four years of experience in the practice of fire protection engineering.
Preferences:
- Ph.D. degree preferred in relevant field of engineering, and/or P.E. (or equivalent) certification preferred in fire protection engineering.
