Job Description:

The Auto Mechanic I is responsible for a wide variety of repair and maintenance work on automotive equipment, primarily small engine repairs, and for assisting in carrying out a preventive maintenance program. Work assignments are initiated by oral instruction or written work orders, while the more complex jobs may require the diagnosis of mechanical difficulties. The Auto Mechanic I may perform preventative maintenance and effective repairs to a variety of lawn, landscaping, street, sidewalk cleaning, and snow removal equipment.  The incumbent will operate equipment and devices, participate in snow removal, etc. as assigned. The incumbent will use a wide variety of hand, electric, and pneumatically powered tools. They will also diagnose mechanical problems so an effective repair can be performed. Supervision is not a responsibility of this class; however, guidance may be provided to lower-level maintenance staff.


Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  It is required that the successful candidate possess:

  • A high school, equivalency, or automotive trade school diploma and two years of experience where the primary responsibility of the position was performing automotive repair work.
  • Satisfactory completion of 30 credits of post-high school education in the field of automotive repair or maintenance, or closely related field, may be substituted for one year of the above stated experience.

The possession and maintenance of a valid New York State Driver's license and Commercial Driver's License (CDL), as appropriate to the type of equipment operated, at time of appointment and duration of employ, is required.

Depending on the work assignment, must meet standards of OSHA regulation 1910.134 Respiratory Protection, and will be required to meet Federal, State and local standards with respect to health and safety.  The incumbent must have physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and evidence of equity-minded practice in all college policies, practices, and personnel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The preferred candidate will possess:

  • Thorough knowledge of the tools, techniques, and terminology associated with the automotive mechanics' trade;
  • Good understanding of the accident and safety precautions of the profession;
  • Snow plow experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex repairs on all types of automotive equipment;
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical difficulties readily;
  • Ability to work from oral or written instructions and without instruction from own diagnosis;
  • Ability to lay out for and instruct helpers in simple repair or maintenance work;
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position;
  • Physical strength and agility;


Additional Information:

POSITION EFFECTIVE:  The position will remain open until filled.

SALARY & BENEFITS:  The starting salary is $51,473.  Additional compensation with seniority steps maximize at a salary of $63,075.  Benefits include comprehensive health coverage, a choice of defined benefit or defined contribution pension plan, generous leave benefits, and access to tax sheltered annuities and a deferred compensation plan.

WORK SCHEDULE:  The work schedule is Monday - Friday: 7:00 am - 3:00 pm.
