Position Summary

The Assistant Aquatics Manager will be cross disciplined in all aspects of the aquatics department including Lifeguarding, Swim Lessons, Coaching, Aquatic Programs. In addition to the duties of each aquatic area, this position will assist in general aquatic administration & pool operations, scheduling, programming, and staff oversight. This position requires set Tuesday-Saturday pm hours as directed by the Aquatics Manager; shifts may vary with request due to seasonal department coverage needs.

Pay Range:

$26.00/hr. - $28.00/hr.

Essential Functions

  • Understand, communicate, & embody the mission, purpose, and values of the Kroc Center & The Salvation Army (TSA).
  • Provide supervision, training, & scheduling of aquatic staff while managing the daily operations of the aquatic facility.
  • Oversee the administration and execution of key aquatic lesson programs, including Kroc Learn to Swim (Youth/Adult), Aquatic Grant Programs, and Seasonal Summer Programs.
  • Ensure quality delivery of aquatic programs such as:
    • Aquatics Safety and Education classes
    • Competitive Aquatic programs
    • Aquatic Events
  • Maintain a visible and active presence on the deck during programming and peak usage times,. This position is primarily Tuesday-Saturday pm hours year-round with a seasonally flexible schedule.
  • Be prepared to instruct, coach, or lifeguard as needed.
  • Conduct research and contribute to the development of new aquatic programs.
  • Assist in creating and implementing professional and personal development opportunities for staff.
  • Regularly evaluate programs to ensure they meet the needs of participants and the community.
  • Schedule and lead various aquatic exercise clinics and conferences.
  • Administrative Responsibilities: Prepare and manage various documents such as reports, correspondence, training records, statistical data, surveys, class registrations, and progress reports.
  • Safety and Emergency Preparedness: Establish and maintain staff training manuals and Emergency Action Plans for the aquatics department.
  • Maintenance and Equipment: Assist in regular preventive maintenance and upkeep of aquatic supplies and equipment. Perform setup and breakdown of facility equipment as needed and report any necessary repairs.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication channels within the aquatics staff and between other Kroc Center departments.
  • Monitor aquatic inventory, ensuring adequate materials are available for programming and initiating orders for new or replacement items as needed.
  • Provide exceptional customer service, ensuring all patrons receive prompt and courteous assistance.
  • Enforce Kroc Center rules to maintain a safe environment for all members, visitors, and staff. This includes cautioning swimmers about unsafe areas and actions, maintaining order in swimming areas, and performing rescues and emergency care as needed.
  • Inspect and ensure the cleanliness of pool areas, locker rooms, restrooms, and equipment storage areas.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers and customers, both in person and over the phone.
  • Provide instruction across various aquatic disciplines, including swimming, water polo, triathlon, aquatic exercise, and American Red Cross Certification Classes, from beginner to advanced levels.
  • Provide constructive feedback to participants regarding their performance.
  • Speak and communicate confidently before both small and large groups with enthusiasm.
  • Be punctual and fully prepared for classes or other assigned duties.
  • Develop class outlines and ensure the curriculum adheres to safety standards.
  • Adhere to the prescribed dress code and always maintain a professional appearance while on duty.
  • Implement water chemical tests as determined by operating procedures.
  • Attend and contribute to staff meetings as required.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to swim 500 yards continuously in under 10 minutes.
  • Ability to demonstrate all four competitive strokes and racing starts.
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects and reach overhead
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Must be in good physical and mental health, capable of meeting the demands of all aquatic's areas.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 22 years of age.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent experience and 3+ years of related experience as a lifeguard, swim instructor, aquatic coach, preferably with some experience overseeing people and programs.
  • Must possess and maintain current certificates in American Red Cross First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) or above; CPR for the Professional Rescuer (CPR Pro), Oxygen Administration, and Lifeguarding.
  • Prefer candidates with Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certificate from nationally recognized organization or verify enrollment in first 90 days of hire.
  • Prefer Water Safety Instructor Certification or verify employment at certified swimming school (2+years of experience).
  • Possess significant experience working at a large public pool facility.
  • Documented knowledge of principles and techniques of aquatic instruction and coaching, Safety protocol (First Aid, CPR, water rescues & lifeguarding); personnel and program supervision; and facility oversight.

  • Ability to work varied shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and split shifts.
  • Proven experience in working effectively with the public.
  • Demonstrate the ability to relate positively and energetically with staff, clients, members, and customers. Must be self-motivated, capable of working both independently and within a team environment and possess strong communication skills to engage effectively with the public.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects that may have conflicting timelines in a time-sensitive manner.
  • Ability to analyze issues, develop workable solutions, and implement them effectively.
  • Ability to present oneself professionally, maintain confidentiality, and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating in English is required; bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Alignment with the educational philosophy of the Kroc Center and The Salvation Army.
  • Ability to work effectively with children, adults, and other staff in leadership, counseling, and educational roles.
  • Must possess the ability to swim with proficiency and endurance.
