Job Description

Assists students in alleviating both on- and off-campus obstacles to academic success (i.e. combating academic deficiencies and in continuing their educational programs through counseling contacts, conducts online college searches each semester as needed by students, schedules college transfer seminars and workshops each semester, coordinates study skills workshops and activities each semester, collaborates and confers with tutorial staff  as needed, collaborates with the Student Activities Coordinator on schedules for campus visits to four-year institutions). Encourages personal and academic achievement through goal-setting and other techniques. Promotes the development of students’ positive self-concept and self-esteem via workshops and seminars in self-esteem and class/classroom management activities each semester, assists with planning and scheduling of educational and cultural activities each semester. Conducts individual and/or group counseling sessions with Student Support Services students. Organizes and facilitates seminars and workshops on various academic, personal, social, and career topics. Monitors and logs students’ academic progress daily. Conducts academic counseling sessions at least twice per semester as a means of monitoring students’ progress (i.e. “early alerts” and midterm monitoring forms, referrals, etc.) and consults and collaborates with faculty and staff as needed. Conducts periodic conferences with peer mentor/coaches, tutors/academic coaches, faculty, and staff about Student Support Services students. Collaborates with the Student Assistance/Records Aide on the financial literacy and planning activities for the students. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Support Services. Assists in campus-wide recruitment and retention efforts. Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean of Student Services, Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs and the College President.

An ability to understand and communicate with disadvantaged students in both academic and personal-social domains                                         
An ability to properly and accurately document within prescribed guidelines all contacts, conferences, and counseling sessions with students. Working knowledge of counseling theories and techniques. An ability to communicate and work with tutor/academic coaches, peer mentor/coaches, faculty, staff, and disadvantaged students. Knowledge of the various community agencies and their services. An understanding of and commitment to the mission, goals, and objectives of the institution. 

Minimum Qualifications

To provide individualized and comprehensive academic, personal, career, and transfer counseling to all Student Support Services students; to develop personalized plans of service tailored to meet individual students’ needs; to promote the development of students’ self-concept and self-esteem; and to assist students in their educational endeavors in both individual and group settings that include the utilization of a wide range of tools, strategies, and techniques designed to enhance personal growth and academic success under the supervision of the Director of Student Support Services

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Guidance, Counseling, Education, Social Work, Student Affairs or a closely related field. Two years’ successful guidance and counseling experience and experience working with educationally disadvantaged clientele. Counseling experience in a community college or four-year institution preferred
