Job Description

The HR Generalist supports various Human Resource activities throughout the plant under direct supervision of the local HR Manager and engages with staff to build rapport and encourage positive employee relations. This position is key to the success of daily operations by supporting and managing staffing levels, payroll, and being the point of contact for employee needs, questions, and concerns while enforcing company policy.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage full-cycle recruitment in connection with staffing agencies as needed including
    • Evaluation of staffing needs
    • Creation of job postings
    • Interviews
    • Creation of offer letters
    • Onboarding activities (background check, MVR, drug screen, paperwork, I-9, etc.)
    • Orientation and HR related training
    • New employee check-in’s and stay interviews
  • Review timecards and payroll items for hourly and temporary employees following our payroll policy defined timeframes and processing payments as needed
  • Ensure adherence to company policies and procedures
  • Handle day to day questions from employees including payroll, benefits (open enrollment and qualifying life events), and general employment issues
  • Manage HR related PO’s and processes orders and invoices once received
  • Coordinate employee communications via plant communication system, newsletters, and spotlights
  • Process terminations, perform exit interviews, and monitor retention trends
  • Communicate FMLA and STD process for employees with assistance from the local employee Nurse as needed
  • Utilize UKG as the HRIS system used for payroll, position/wage adjustments, timecards, recruitment, and personnel file management in accordance with company and legal requirements
  • Run various employee reports as needed
  • Utilize ERS as the local tracking system for training records, points, vacations, call offs, late starts, etc.
  • Work with EHS for workers comp claims, post-accident drug screens, and other activities as needed
  • Responsible for assisting with employee activities including global DE&I initiative events, recognition and distribution of various awards, and local employee engagement events
  • Enforce and maintain a high standard of safety requirements within the facility to limit occurrence of serious injury
  • Completion of general administration duties including filing, scanning, printing of name badges, and managing access
  • Adherence to applicable employment laws and corporate policies
  • Adherence to NSG/Pilkington Standards of Business Conduct and its Values and Principles
  • Other duties as assigned by manager

Scope/Dimensions:

  • Maintain open and candid relationships with employees of all levels
  • Daily interaction with Plant Manager, Assistant Plant Manager, Union (if in union environment), department managers, and guard shack to keep up to date with needs, changes, and employee situations within the plant
  • Regular communication with other NA HR personnel to stay current on policies and procedures
  • Interaction as needed with various corporate departments including Payroll, Finance, Ethics, Marketing, and Procurement
  • Create partnerships with outside vendors, staffing agencies, and local community/school groups

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, Organizational Development, or equivalent experience
  • 2-5 years’ experience in a Human Resource role
  • Knowledge of applicable State and Federal Employment Laws
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent customer service skills

Qualifications Desired:

  • Relevant HR certifications including SHRM and PHR
  • Experience working with UKG
  • Experience working in a union environment
  • Knowledge of payroll administration
