Description

Do you like helping others achieve their academic goals? Heartland Community College hires Peer and Lead Tutors from diverse educational backgrounds to meet with individuals or small groups on a scheduled or drop-in basis. Part-time hours with flexible scheduling are available.

Tutors provide assistance to students in general skill or specific content areas with a goal to increase independent learning. Our Tutoring Services program is nationally certified, which helps inform our generous training program.

Consideration will be given to applicants in all subject areas, however we have a particular need for Tutors in the following subject areas as well as those who are able to cover multiple disciplines/broad subject areas:
  • Biology (specifically 181 & 191)
  • Computer Networking
  • Computer Science
  • English
  • Math (all courses)
  • Nursing
Additionally, we are interested in applicants who can work at HCC's Lincoln or Pontiac, IL location in a variety of subject areas such as Math, Writing, Nursing, etc.

 

Requirements

All Peer and Lead Tutors: Peer and Lead Tutors must have earned an A or a B grade in the equivalent of any course they wish to tutor. All tutor positions require excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as functional computer skills.

Lead Tutors: Lead Tutors must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree.

Peer Tutors: Peer Tutors are undergraduate students or those with associate degrees who have earned a minimum of 15 semester hours. Working as a Peer Tutor can qualify as a federal work-study job, but we do not require that Peer Tutors be federal work-study eligible.

Desired Qualifications

  • Successful tutoring experience
  • Demonstrated respect for and inclusion of individuals with diverse perspectives, identities, and behaviors
  • Ability to interact professionally at all times
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn new software as needed

 


These positions are based in Central IL and ability to be present on-campus/in-person as needed is required.
