About the Department

The Department of Animal Science provides academic instruction to undergraduate and graduate students, extension and engagement programs to farmers, and conducts research into the nutrition, genetic, reproductive, health, and well-being of domesticated animals. This non-tenure track position is located at the Mountain Research Station (MRS), which is a diversified crop and livestock research facility located in Waynesville, NC (pop. 10,178). The MRS provides an ideal location for research to support mountain farmers in horticultural, alternative and forage crops, tobacco, Christmas Trees, and beef cattle. The station is home to 6 full-time faculty. The beef herd at MRS is composed of 70 registered Angus cows and the facilities include a 100-head feedlot divided into 16 pens.

Essential Job Duties

The Mountain Livestock Specialist will serve in a professional faculty role at the rank of Extension Assistant Professor, and will be expected to develop an extension program designed to enhance livestock production including practices that improve production efficiency while adding value to cattle and small ruminant operations (as well as other livestock species in pasture-based production systems). Areas of expertise of the Mountain Livestock Specialist should be one of the following: cattle nutrition and management, forage or pasture management, or beef systems management to address the cattle industry on a holistic basis.

Additional responsibilities will include

  • Assist with the Waynesville Central Bull Test
  • Contribute to regional youth livestock programs
  • Participate in the development of an educational focus at the new WNC Regional Livestock Center
  • Collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, and external constituents.

The key to success will be cultivating relationships with stakeholders that are mutually beneficial for the department, college, and university.

The Mountain Livestock Specialist will develop an innovative applied research program on the Mountain Research Station and Upper Mountain Research Station (Laurel Springs) that will impact livestock production in the region and complement their extension program. These two research stations are owned and operated by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and the development of a successful research program will require a close relationship with the staff of that agency.

Exceptional oral and written communication and a demonstrated ability to broadly communicate science with a variety of audiences are essential. It will also be expected to obtain competitive grant funding and produce peer-reviewed extension and research publications.
