Job Description

The Custodial Supervisor at the University of Notre Dame plays a critical role in fostering a welcoming, clean, and safe environment that reflects Notre Dame’s mission of excellence. This position oversees a dedicated team of custodians, ensuring their work aligns with university standards for cleanliness, safety, and service. The Custodial Supervisor will also engage in operational management, performance reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance service quality across campus facilities.

What You’ll Do

Operational Oversight
  • Schedule and assign custodial tasks, including weekend and special project coverage, to ensure buildings are maintained to the university’s standards. Manage time-off requests, attendance, and employee absences, keeping thorough records.
  • Monitor staff performance within Notre Dame’s performance management system, providing timely feedback and documentation. Approve requests for leave and handle performance management by recognizing achievements, coaching, and initiating corrective actions when necessary.
Supervision and Training
  • Lead a team of custodians, adjusting work assignments based on project requirements, seasonal needs, and available resources. Create detailed Job Assignment Descriptions and ensure staff accountability.
  • Conduct on-the-job training in cleaning techniques and safety procedures, setting high standards for work quality and team collaboration. Foster a supportive, team-oriented culture that emphasizes Notre Dame’s core values of respect, teamwork, and dedication.
Customer Service and Collaboration
  • Serve as the primary contact for building managers, rectors, and other stakeholders, responding promptly to their needs and complaints. Ensure alignment with Notre Dame’s commitment to high-quality service by conducting regular inspections, quality checks, and follow-ups to maintain customer satisfaction.
  • Collaborate closely with leadership and custodial staff to ensure adequate supply levels and the availability of necessary equipment. Take responsibility for ordering, inventory, and preventive maintenance inspections.
Special Projects and Safety
  • Periodically provide weekend and holiday coverage, support special campus events, and participate in on-call duty for custodial teams. Lead and coordinate campus-wide initiatives that align with the university’s process improvement programs.
  • Oversee safety compliance, including incident investigations, reporting, and follow-up with corrective actions. Ensure custodial staff follow proper protocols for cleaning and handling materials, prioritizing health and safety.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in custodial management or a similar supervisory role
  • Strong interpersonal skills to foster a collaborative and inclusive environment
  • Excellent organizational abilities and a high standard for quality control
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with custodial management systems like AiM
  • Experience within educational institutions or similar facilities
  • Familiarity with Notre Dame’s maintenance management system
