HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow responsible for initiating and carrying out research projects in collaboration with a research team. Pursues research along a focused line of inquiry and reports results to relevant audiences (e.g., publication, presentation).
This position will support the National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health (NCDMPH) by providing technical assistance with research and development projects as well as operations and logistics support. The incumbent will work on the Department of Defense (DoD) National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) Pilot Program (Pilot) and Joint Disaster Medicine and Public Health Ecosystem teams in developing and implementing research projects focused on health disaster events and large-scale combat operations. These efforts include the development, evaluation, and presentation of novel project ideas; collaborating with partner organizations; preparing research grants, peer-reviewed manuscripts, reports, and presentations; collecting and analyzing public health and medical data; and contextualizing results among the scientific evidence base of the appropriate fields. The incumbent will report to the Director of Science and work alongside the research team.
The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing, and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.
- Assist in designing, developing, executing, and implementing disaster health and medicine research and programs.
- Investigates and identifies appropriate datasets (i.e., publicly available and access controlled) and methodology to achieve project objectives.
- Establish research and program protocols and procedures, including overall scientific strategy, data collection and organization, coordination of researchers conducting field and operational studies, and ensuring consistently high technical quality in presentation of results.
- Develops and executes an analysis plan with appropriate software and high-quality programming/coding, including the creation of visualizations and tables.
- Lead and assist with the development and writing of competitive grant proposals and peer-reviewed publications as well as public presentations at conferences and/or workshops.
- Effectively communicates scientific concepts and research results to non-technical audiences, including senior leaders and decision-makers.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor including relevant training for project.
Education and Experience
- Doctoral degree in biological sciences or a related field, preferably in a public health.
- Minimum of 0-5 years’ experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Prior research experience required, including developing, planning, and communicating research ideas as well as executing and evaluating research studies.
- Experience with written and oral scientific communication required, as demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications, teaching at a university level, and/or conference or workshop presentations.
- Preferred: Strong quantitative analytical skills in epidemiology, biostatistics, or applied math (e.g., advanced regression modeling, spatial and longitudinal analysis, statistical weighting, and sampling)
- Preferred: Experience with project management, including planning and executing projects with external collaborators, achieving results within critical timelines, and effectively communicating progress to senior leaders and decision-makers.
- Preferred: Understanding of disaster management, military health system and research, or humanitarian response
- Knowledge of appropriate scientific area; ability to analyze and interpret data.
- Ability to work with diverse disciplines and provide subject matter expertise in at least one biological science field.
- Self-starter who proactively identifies and overcomes challenges as well as takes the initiative to seize opportunities.
- Strong problem-solving skills that include working independently and collaboratively.
- US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance.
Work Environment
- This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
