BASIC FUNCTION: The Dean of Health Sciences and STEM provides administrative and instructional leadership for all Health Sciences and STEM academic programs, faculty, and staff, ensuring academic excellence and alignment with industry needs to prepare students for successful careers and transfer. The dean provides leadership in the development, implementation, and enhancement of curricula, fosters innovation and collaboration across disciplines, and guides the strategic direction of the division. The dean oversees the Simulation Center and regional career centers, ensuring that programs and facilities effectively support students in achieving their educational goals. Reporting to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Learning (VPAASL), the dean is key in shaping the future of the NIACC (North Iowa Area Community College) Health Sciences and STEM division, enhancing student success while effectively managing programs, accreditation, resources, and personnel.
START DATE: ASAP (Position will remain open until filled with first consideration given to applications received by October 24, 2024.)
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Starting salary of $93,300 to $116,700 based on qualifications and experience. Benefits package includes Blue Cross/Blue Shield health insurance; eye care, dental, life and disability insurance; paid vacation and sick leave; a choice of IPERS or TIAA retirement plans and a variety of additional optional benefits.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in a health sciences or STEM discipline from a regionally accredited institution, doctorate preferred. Five (5) years teaching experience in an academic discipline represented within the Division with a preference for community college experience. Minimum of five (5) years educational administration experience in post-secondary education setting such as serving as a program lead or department chair, including a minimum of two years in a supervisor role. Physical requirements include ability to move about the campus between buildings and classrooms. Additional requirements include excellent communication skills, ability to understand words and respond effectively and appropriately, visual acuity to view a computer terminal, ability to use appropriate judgment and to apply tact and courtesy in difficult situations.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Develop and execute a strategic vision for Health Sciences and STEM programs aligned with the College’s mission and goals.
- Lead initiatives to enhance program quality, relevance, and responsiveness to industry trends and workforce demands in healthcare and STEM fields.
- Oversee the current and future regional career academies to serve high school partners in offering programs to address workforce needs.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Nursing, PTA (Physical Therapy Assistant), Medical Assistant, and health programs, including scheduling, budget management, and resource allocation.
- Oversee the STEM disciplines, providing leadership in scheduling, budget management, and resource allocation.
- Ensure program review process is quality and has rigor to ensure comprehensive review is accurate to inform future program decisions.
- Convene Program Advisory Council meetings as required.
- Works collaboratively with Continuing Education to offer CNA and EMS.
- Recruit, mentor, and support faculty and staff within the Health Sciences and STEM divisions.
- Observe and evaluate all full-time faculty on a regular basis, providing feedback and opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Ensure adjunct faculty are observed regularly and provided professional development.
- Provide leadership in development of effective class schedules; monitor teaching loads and faculty assignments.
- Oversee Simulation Center staff and area.
- Foster a culture of professional growth, collaboration, and excellence in teaching.
- Build collaborative relationships with faculty and staff, administering programmatic policies, procedures, and opportunities effectively and efficiently.
- Oversee the development, revision, and assessment of curricula within Health Sciences and STEM disciplines, ensuring alignment with industry standards and educational outcomes.
- Promote innovative teaching methodologies and technologies to enhance student learning experiences and skills development.
- Identify and implement new courses and programs.
- Provide leadership and guidance in implementation, maintenance, and compliance of program accreditation standards, licensure requirements, and regulatory guidelines for all programs in Nursing and Health Sciences.
- Provide leadership in program review and assessment to ensure students are gaining knowledge and skill set to be successful in the workplace or next step in education.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of Clinical Affiliation Agreements with clinical agencies used for student practicums and internships.
- Remain current in national, regional, and local trends related to Nursing and Health Sciences.
- Provide leadership in meeting the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) standards to ensure compliance.
- Prepare recommendations for and administer the Division’s budget, overseeing all expenditures for goods, services, and personnel in collaboration with the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Learning.
- Ensure efficient allocation and utilization of resources to support program goals and enhance student success.
- Manage the acquisition, administration, and compliance of grants supporting Health Sciences and STEM initiatives.
- Develop grant proposals, budgets, and reports in collaboration with faculty and staff to secure external funding.
- Collect, analyze, and report data on key performance indicators, benchmarks, and outcomes related to the College’s strategic goals and initiatives. Use data-driven insights to assess progress, identify areas for improvement, and make evidence-based decisions to enhance effectiveness and efficiency.
- Analyze data to inform division decisions.
- Promote student engagement, retention, and success within Health Sciences and STEM programs.
- Collaborate with student development departments to provide comprehensive academic advising, career counseling, and supportive services tailored to healthcare and STEM career pathways.
- Cultivate and maintain partnerships with healthcare providers, STEM industries, employers, and community organizations.
- Facilitate internship, clinical placement, job placement, and research opportunities for students.
- Serve as a liaison between the College and external stakeholders to promote Health Sciences and STEM programs and initiatives.
Perform in a manner which strengthens the coordination and cooperation of all organizational components of the College, including opportunities for student recruitment.
